The Region

The Coastal Sanctuary waterfront properties are located one hour drive north of Dunedin and less than half-an-hour south of Oamaru.
DUNEDIN
About an hour to the south is Dunedin with its superb Victorian and Edwardian architecture, an excellent art gallery, live theatre and a busy café culture - also reflected in the vibrant student culture of Otago University. The nearby Otago Peninsula is a haven for wildlife and picturesque bays and settlements all waiting to be explored. From Dunedin you can head south to the beautiful Catlins with its lush native coastal forests of centuries old trees, wild beaches, pretty waterfalls and beautiful walks.
CENTRAL OTAGO
Alternatively you can head inland from Dunedin towards Central Otago with its orchards, vineyards, quaint stone buildings, lakes, skifields and of course Queenstown, New Zealand's adventure capital. Central Otago can be reached more directly by following the colourfully named Pig Root from nearby Palmerston, then heading across the Maniototo, a rugged plains area surrounded by ranges dotted with unusual rock outcrops. It's a magical area loved by artists for its unusual light and interesting landscape.
OAMARU
Half-an-hour north of Moeraki is Oamaru, known for its many fine historic buildings, built from blocks of a local pale gold sandstone known as Oamaru stone. A few kilometres on you reach the Waitaki River, renowned for its salmon fishing. It should be mentioned that the whole Otago province is criss-crossed by excellent fishing rivers now matter which direction you go in. Further inland lies the fabulous tussock-clad McKenzie Country, the Southern Alps, and New Zealand's highest mountain, Mt Cook which reaches a heady 3,762 metres (12,349 feet).
SCHOOLS
A selection of primary and one secondary school are located within a 15min drive. Oamaru has at least 2 major high schools, along with Otago Boys / Otago Girls schools in Dunedin. As an academic centre Dunedin offers renown Otago University, home to such specialties as medicine, dentistry and health science.
